A Group of Male Leaders Who Will Create a Society in which All Women Shine

Shimizu Corporation endorses the Declaration on Action issued by the male leaders meeting convened to accelerate the advancement of women under the Creating a Society in which All Women Shine initiative. As one of the participants in the male leaders group, Shimizu had declared that it will promote greater advancement of female employees.
Shimizu is implementing a variety of company-wide measures to promote the advancement of women employees. These include a Forum on Promoting the Advancement of Women, a Seminar on Promoting the Advancement of Women for junior women and their superiors, an Iku-Boss Award for superiors who support the childcare needs of their subordinates and actively work to develop women, and follow-up training on increasing career awareness and career-building among women.
Shimizu will continue to put even more effort into both the hard and soft aspects of establishing flexible work styles and creating an environment that enables women and other employees from a wide variety of backgrounds to participate actively and advance.

Iku-Boss refers to managers who actively work to support the development of women and support their childcare needs, and promote the creation of an energetic workplace that makes it easy to work.

General Employer Action Plan Based on the Act on Promotion of Women's Participation and Advancement in the Workplace

We have formulated an action plan that includes quantitative goals on promoting the advancement of women to an even greater degree at Shimizu Corporation. This action plan is based on the Act on Promotion of Women’s Participation and Advancement in the Workplace and Shimizu is working to implement the measures detailed in the plan.

Shimizu also acquired the Level 3 Eruboshi (L-Star) in 2016, designating it as a company that has fulfilled all five rating categories of the Eruboshi program. This is awarded to companies that provide superior conditions, etc. for the advancement of women. Shimizu is the first general contractor to earn this designation.

Action Plan (Level 1)

Shimizu has formulated the following action plan to establish an employment environment that enables women to advance to managerial positions.

1.Plan Term
April 1, 2016 to March 31, 2019
2.Goal #1
Goal #1 Triple the number of women in management positions (equivalent to section manager or higher) compared to FY 2014.
Goal #2 Double the number of women engineers compared to FY 2014.
3.Contents of Initiatives and Implementation Timeframe
Initiative #1 Conduct career training aimed at developing women managers.
  • The purpose of the training is to give female employees the mindset of pursuing a career track in management, based on the fact that there are currently few women managers to serve as role models and it is difficult for female employees to visualize a career in which they would become managers.

Initiative #2 Establish an environment that enables women to continue working.
  • Introduce a flextime system. [Implementation timeframe (schedule): April 2016]
  • Also take the opinions of employees into consideration regarding what measures are needed to enable them to continue working.
Initiative #3 Raise awareness among the management ranks.
  • Consider conducting training, providing information, etc. to people in management positions to raise their awareness of the importance of promoting the advancement of women and of work-life balance.

Voluntary Action Plan for Promoting Women to Corporate Officer and Management

Shimizu promotes diversity of human resources and aims to respond to changes in the business environment and work to increase corporate value by utilizing the diverse range of capabilities and individual strengths of each and every employee to the maximum extent. One part of that initiative is to promote the advancement of women. We have set the goal of tripling the number of women in management compared to 2014 by 2019, and are implementing measures to develop and utilize woman to achieve that goal. We are actively working to achieve this by conducting follow-up seminars aimed at increasing the awareness of careers and career building among women and holding company-wide forums for women. We are also enhancing career consulting services that focus on each individual, holding social events with the theme of work-life balance, and taking other steps to build networks among employees.

Iku-Boss* Corporate Alliance

Shimizu engages in many initiatives aimed at utilizing the diverse range of individuality among our employees to enable each and every employee to manifest his or her capabilities and individual strengths to the maximum extent. We launched the Iku-Boss Awards 2015 (Shimizu’s version of the Iku-Boss Awards). This is a program created to confer Iku-Boss awards from employees, and it was created because we recognized the importance of changing the mindsets of leaders in each organization in order to create a workplace environment that makes it easy for people to work and pursue work-life balance. Our recent decision to become a member of the Iku-Boss Corporate Alliance is aimed at achieving further penetration of the Iku-Boss mindset and driving innovations in work styles through the Iku-Boss program.
