A joint venture (joint operation) formed by Shimizu Corporation (President: Kazuyuki Inoue, “Shimizu”) and PT Adhi Karya (Persero) Tbk, an Indonesian state-owned company has been awarded a contract for Contract Package 201, the first section awarded among construction works for the Jakarta MRT North-South Line Phase 2. The employer is PT MRT Jakarta and contract amount is roughly 34 billion yen.

The Jakarta MRT is a mass rapid transit system that includes the first subway in Indonesia. Phase 1 of the project, with the total length of 15.7km linking central and southern Jakarta, started operation in March last year. Civil works for the Phase 1 were divided into six contract packages and awarded as design-build contracts, among which Shimizu was responsible for three packages in total, serving as a joint venture leader on two sections, and as a member of joint venture on one section.

The Phase 2 of the project is to extend the operational section northward by about 11.5 km including 11 stations. Section A of the Phase 2 is subway sections extending from the existing Bundaran H.I. (Hotel Indonesia) Station (built in Phase 1) to Kota Station, and Section B runs from Kota Station to Ancol Station. Section A is set to start operation in 2024 and Section B in 2027.

The Contract Package 201 is the first section ordered among four civil/building packages for the Section A of the Phase 2. Length of the section is 2, 681m connecting Bundaran H.I. (Hotel Indonesia) Station to Harmoni Station (to be built in the Package 202 of the Phase 2). It consists of two-story underground stations: Thamrin Station (240m long) and Monas Station (260m long), a 214m-long cut-and-cover tunnel, and two tunnels (northbound and southbound) constructed by tunnel boring machine (TBM) method (1,967m long respectively) with finished inner diameter of 6.05m. The construction period is scheduled from March 2020 to December 2024. Thamrin Station will be a junction station for the planned East-West line, which will be built after the North-South line is completed.

At the bidding stage, the Shimizu-led joint venture identified the potential challenges and measures in constructing Thamrin Station and the cut-and-cover tunnel in the soft ground conditions. The employers’ recognition of the said proposal and Shimizu’s track record in the Phase 1 contracts resulted in the award.

Shimizu regards Indonesia as its one of the major overseas offices given its rapid economic growth and will implement business development activities there targeting at large-scale construction projects in which Shimizu’s technical expertise could be utilized.
