Regionally-Oriented Global Operations Toward a Smart & Innovative Company - North America
J.S.T. Harrisburg Production Engineering Center, PA
For half a century since our entry into the US market, we have been supported by many clients in developing our business in North America. Currently, with the regional management company Shimizu America based in Atlanta, Georgia, our company is engaging in construction, plant engineering, investment and development businesses in the U.S. as well as in Mexico. In this article, we highlight footprints of Shimizu in the region and its outlook for the future.
Ventured Forth to America Together with the Clients (1950s to early 80s)
Our entry into the U.S. began as a design cooperation for a project in 1958. Eventually, we established a representative office in San Francisco in 1962 and opened another in New York in 1966.
As the trade friction between Japan and the U.S. intensified in the 1980s, more and more Japanese companies expanded to the U.S. Seeing that many companies set their bases on the West Coast of the country, we established a subsidiary in Los Angeles in 1981. We undertook a number of projects in California, Oregon, and Washington, mainly for clients specialized in electrical and electronic parts or semiconductors.

Construction Boom among Japanese-Affiliated Companies (Late 1980s to early 90s)
Since the Plaza Accord was announced in 1985, Japanese companies’ entry into North America picked up momentum and accelerated, with purpose to mitigate trade friction, avoid exchange risk, and gather regional information.
In addition to the West Coast, Japanese companies started to advance to New York and other regions on the East Coast and Southeastern regions like Georgia and North Carolina. Along with that, Japanese schools opened in these regions as well, creating further demand for construction. By responding to the clients’ needs, we have established our footholds across the U.S.

Business Development Centered in the Southeast (from the Late 1990s)
In the late 1990s, establishment of manufacturing bases by clients in the Southeast or the South got in full swing, specifically for those in the auto industry.
Responding to this change, we relocated our U.S. Headquarters to the Southeastern area in Atlanta, Georgia in 2000, which we had formerly been transferred from Los Angeles to New York. Since then, we have been mainly operating in the neighboring states and southern Texas.

Advancing into Mexico
Our business in Mexico traced back to a project in 1987, where Shimizu America assisted Seiko Epson Corporation to build a new eyewear lens factory in Juarez. Later in 1993, we set up a regional office in Tijuana, Baja California in northwestern Mexico and established a structure to respond to design-build projects in the region.
Relocated to Querétaro in central Mexico in 2012, the office is now operating with its main focus on manufacturing facilities for auto companies in the Bajío region, and is also working on many projects in Mexico City, and other regions such as Jalisco and Nuevo León.

Working with Global Companies
In recent years, we are receiving more inquiries from non-Japanese companies. We are now taking on a construction management (CM) project that is a standard practice in the U.S., with economical designs and budget and process control using ICTs to satisfy the clients’ needs.

Aiming to be the Best Partner for Clients
We have been involved in more than 300 projects to build manufacturing and research facilities and to provide interior works for offices and stores in the U.S. and Mexico.
Currently, we are further expanding our business fields, beyond construction to those spanning from investment to engineering. Considering M&A as another way to achieve business expansion, in 2020 we acquired 100% ownership of Perigon International Inc., a consulting engineering firm in North Carolina. Then in 2025, we acquired Cross Management Corp., a renovation and interior design company based in New York State, and turned it into our subsidiary. With a variety of businesses booming, North America will continue to be an extremely important market for us.
Shimizu will further engage in the business in North America, to be the best partner for clients.
