Senior Managing Officer and Director
In charge of Sustainability
The Analects and the Abacus inspires us towards a sustainability management - balancing the pursuit of growth with addressing socioenvironmental issues.
We will continue to work with stakeholders to co-create value for a more sustainable future.
Sustainability Management Based on the Principles of The Analects and the Abacus
At the very core of our company is the ethos expressed in our corporate credo, namely the precepts that Eiichi Shibusawa recorded in The Analects and the Abacus. It states that a company should commit to ethical practices that create positive social impact, and that doing so will ultimately deliver honest profit enabling the company to further grow; this ethos is the essence of our sustainability management. In order to continue creating positive social impact, the company disseminate the principles of The Analects and the Abacus throughout our organization, and incorporate them into our core strategies and business practices to increase the value of our organization into the future. Our commitment is to pass on this management philosophy to the next generation, ensuring that our organization will always balance the pursuit of growth with a contribution toward a safe, healthy, and sustainable future for all.
Sustainability Management for Society Today
Our company contends with an increasingly complex array of issues and is expected to play an increasing role in addressing them. They include climate action, protecting biodiversity, supporting recycling, nurturing and empowering talent, managing a responsible supply chain, and forging effective governance structures. While these represent expectations from society, we feel they are also a source of value creation and opportunities for developing new businesses and competitive advantages.
To balance social responsibility with the cultivation of business opportunities, our current Mid-Term Business Plan〈2024–2026〉specifies certain key organizational functions and commits us to increasing their collaboration to bolster our corporate infrastructure. Under this plan, we have developed a number of initiatives. Examples include considering the entire lifecycle of buildings to make our proposals support the carbon transition, developing the SUSMICS series of green materials made from biochar, opening patents to help the construction industry raise its technological level, implementing green infrastructure, monitoring and managing nature-related risks, building an inclusive and empowering workplace, and engaging in constructive dialogue with stakeholders. Each Mitsuo Morii Senior Managing Officer and Director In charge of Sustainability initiative is delivering results, raising the level of our sustainability management. We will continue to work closely with our partners across the Shimizu Group and with all stakeholders on initiatives that transcend the conventional boundaries of a construction business in pursuit of value creation for tomorrow’s needs.
“Assertive” Sustainability Management: Co-creating the Future
We believe in “assertive” sustainability management - an approach to sustainability that creates new value. This requires an organizational culture and talent base that promotes innovation, as well as an ecosystem for co-creation with stakeholders.
n 2023, we launched an ecosystem for innovation and talent development called Smart Innovation Ecosystem NOVARE, where our employees work with a diverse range of partners on co-creation initiatives, and serves to expedite the adoption and scaling of new businesses and technologies to tackle society’s issues. We will continue to use NOVARE as a platform for piloting and scaling sustainability management initiatives that balances engagement in socioenvironmental challenges with economic value.
Building social infrastructure that supports people’s lives and passing them on to future generations: this mission that we have continuously performed over our 222-year history will remain unchanged into the future.
We will utilize our six “capitals” (human capital, Monozukuri (superb craftsmanship) capital, intellectual capital, social and relational capital, natural capital, and financial capital) in ways that collaborate and create value, all to realize a sustainable society.
We will also maintain close dialogue with our shareholders, investors, and other stakeholders as part of our commitment to responsibly managing the company with a long-term aim of remaining a trusted organization for generations to come.
