Contributing to the global environment is one of Shimizu's management principles.
In order to materialize this principle, we established the Shimizu Global Environmental Charter in 1991. We clearly explain our stance on environmental initiatives and promote environmental management.

Environmental Protection

Shimizu regards buildings as public assets and places importance on reducing the environmental burden generated by buildings over their entire lifecycle. We have set goals such as mitigation of global warming, resource conservation, and ecosystem preservation, and are working to achieve these goals.

We are putting even greater effort into enhancing activities at each stage of a building's lifecycle, achieving greater energy savings, extending the life of and reusing existing buildings, and restoring and creating natural environments.

Environmental Business

Shimizu is active in a broad range of environmental businesses, including remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater, construction of final disposal and intermediate processing facilities, initiatives in solar power, wind power, and other types of renewable energy, creating biotopes on building rooftops and greening of walls in connection with ecosystem preservation, and production/use of emissions credits, among other activities.

We will not stay within the confines of construction in responding to the changing needs of society. We will create new businesses specializing in environmental technologies that utilize Shimizu's integrative strengths and technical skills.

Environmental Risk Management

Environmental accidents and legal and regulatory violations do not only have a major adverse impact on the company; they also have an enormous impact on the surrounding community and stakeholders. To prevent the materialization of such risks, Shimizu has established the Rules on Construction By-product Management, Guidelines on Handling of Construction By-products, Emergency Management Guidelines, and other internal rules and guidelines. We process construction waste properly, disclose information on waste processing, and work to prevent environmental accidents and environmental pollution.

Shimizu provides education on compliance and risk management at a company-wide level, divisional level, and to subcontractors, exercising strict management and working to improve awareness.

Environmental & Social Contributions

Shimizu conducts environmental seminars and other activities for young people in the community, in addition to longstanding activities such as job site-centered initiatives in co-existing harmoniously in the community and the participation of individual employees in community activities via the volunteer network.

Shimizu regards the construction of buildings and structures that are superior assets to the community as an integral part of our corporate social responsibility. Our definition of superior assets is buildings and structures that exceed the expectations of our customers and the community, and are environmentally friendly.

Shimizu Global Environmental Charter

Basic Principles

Shimizu contributes to building a sustainable society by working to preserve the global environment and to create a better environment as a corporate citizen and as a member of the construction industry.

The Global Environment Office (now the EMS Administrative Office) was established in April 1991 and the Environmental Countermeasures Promotion Committee (Chair: Vice President) was established in December of the same year. The company's policy on initiatives was decided upon at the first meeting of the Environmental Countermeasures Promotion Committee. The Shimizu Global Environmental Charter was established in October 1991. It was subsequently amended in April 2002 and has remained the same since then.

In 1991, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) enacted the Industrial Charter for Sustainable Development and the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations (now, the Japan Business Federation) enacted the Keidanren Global Environment Charter.

Basic Environmental Policy

In April 1997, Shimizu adopted the company's basic position statement and guidelines on conduct on environmental management in the name of the president and established the Basic Environmental Policy which set forth guidelines on conduct. The policy was amended in April of 1997, 2003, 2004, and 2006, and has remained the same since then.

The Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was adopted at the Conference of Parties in 1997, and the Japan Business Federation published the Voluntary Action Plan on the Environment.

Basic Position Statement

By basing environmental management on the principles of the Global Environmental Charter, Shimizu and its group companies provide environmentally friendly products and services that surpass the expectations of customers and the community and contribute to value creation and sustainable development through all stages of a building's lifecycle.

Guidelines on Conduct

  1. Shimizu complies with laws, regulations, and accords relating to the environment and employs a management system for activities that fall along the two axes of environmentally friendly business activities and creation and restoration of the environment.
  2. Shimizu recognizes that the construction industry has a major impact on global warming, resources, and natural ecosystems by its very nature, and strives to take the environment into consideration in all construction activities.
  3. Shimizu is active in the development of environmental technologies which can be widely adopted in the community.
  4. Shimizu actively engages stakeholders in dialog, works to contribute to the environment and to the community, provides support to external organizations, and communicates information on these activities to the community.
  5. Shimizu conducts environmental education and training, and strives to improve environmental knowledge and awareness among all employees as the basis for environmental activities.

Environmental Policy

The Building Construction Headquarters, the Civil Engineering Headquarters, the Engineering Headquarters, and the Nuclear Projects Div. have acquired ISO 14001 certification and declare their overall intentions and policies on environmental activities in the Environmental Policies they have established in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard.

The structure of our environmental management system consists of two groups, divided according to the content of division activities: Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses, which is mainly responsible for the design and construction of buildings and structures, and Engineering Business, which handles engineering services.

Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses

The Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses, which consist of the Building Construction Headquarters, Civil Engineering Headquarters, branches, the headquarters management divisions, Sustainable Green Business Promotion Division, Technology Planning Division, Institute of Technology, and the Safety Administration & Environment Division, have acquired ISO 14001 certification as a group. The Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses have established an Environmental Policy and develop an Environmental Activity Plan. Plans are formulated and disseminated at each hierarchical level, from the Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses down to each section and job site (project).

Engineering Headquarters

The Engineering Headquarters differs from the Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses in business content and scope. It has developed a separate Environmental Policy and engages in environmental activities. Engineering Headquarters has also acquired ISO 14001 certification.

SDGs and ESG Promotion Committee

The Global Environment Committee was established in 1993 as the ultimate company-wide decision-making body on matters relating to the environment. The committee is chaired by the President. The committee was reorganized as the CSR & Global Environment Committee in fiscal 2008, as the SDGs and ESG Promotion Committee in fiscal 2018

Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses

An executive officer in charge of environment company-wide has been designated as top management in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard. A head of the EMS Administrative Division has also been appointed. The head of each division within the Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses appoints an Environmental Management Supervisor and an Environmental Promotion Supervisor, to operate an environmental management system.

Engineering Headquarters

An executive officer in charge of the headquarters has been designated as top management in accordance with the ISO 14001 standard. A Chief Administrator of Quality & Environmental Management is appointed to operate an environmental management system.

Safety Administration & Environment Division (EMS Administrative Office)

This division was established in 1991 as the administrative office for the environmental management system of the Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses (formerly called the Global Environment Office).

ISO 14001 Certification

In 1997, an active movement to acquire ISO 14001 certification began in the construction industry.

In March 1999, Shimizu acquired certification for all divisions and branches in Building Construction Headquarters and Civil Engineering Headquarters, except for overseas branches. At the time, other companies were acquiring certifications at the branch level and Shimizu was the only company to acquire a blanket certification for its entire Construction and Civil Engineering Headquarters.

The registered name was subsequently changed to the Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses due to an organizational restructuring. The Institute of Technology was included in the scope of certification in July 2003 and the management divisions at headquarters were included in April 2006. The scope of certification has remained the same since then.

As of November 2017, Shimizu has acquired ISO 14001 certification for the Construction and Civil Engineering Businesses and the Engineering Headquarters. This encompasses roughly 95% of all Shimizu employees.
