CASE STUDY 01Tokyu Community Technical Training Center NOTIA

Approaching 3 themes through computational design

We planned for the core training space to be the "Training HUB," and the “Support Space” to be the areas surrounding the training HUB where there will be contact with the external environment. We imagined a composition that would produce a complex effect by creating a mutually complementary relationship. The central "Training HUB" is a RC structure and the "support space" is a S structure, taking in ambient light and wind to create various inside/outside relationships.

Creating an "umbrella" using computational design that controls the line-of-sight while remaining elegant

Using the idea presented by the interior designer of a “forest of umbrellas,” we employed a computational design approach to effectively block the line-of-sight from the upper guest rooms to the open-air bath.

Realizing the "creative field*" with computational design

We aimed to create an office (creative field*) that encourages more creative and flexible working styles by mixing various work areas on one plate. Using computational design, we explored the possibilities of new workspace planning from the relationships between "people" and "activities" and the characteristics of "space".

Light and visual environment design by fusing tradition and computation

To support the one-plate office space introduced in CASE 03, RC wall columns were placed along the perimeter to form a lattice beam frame. As a result, natural light is actively captured from the open outer wall surface, while ensuring a spacious interior space. Additionally, we planned a skylight to deliver sufficient light to the deep central area of the footprint, aiming for a “bright and comfortable workplace.”

Create an Engaging Collaboration Atrium Using Computational Design

We aimed to create a building plan with a center atrium that would become the symbol of communication and collaboration. Using computational design, we explored the possibility of an active atrium that encourages collaboration between tenants and guides bright natural light to the interior.

CASE STUDY 06MiCHi no Terrace Toyosu LA VISTA Tokyo Bay

Use of computational design according to 3 types of design materials

In this project we introduced algorithms for three areas using different design materials: site design, standard floor PC panels, and rooftop screen walls. The algorithm was implemented according to the characteristics of "evaluation," "generation," and "optimization."

From computational design to digital fabrication A new process of making that overlays the digital and physical in both directions

In response to the request for an iconic symbol for the world's most advanced Global Zero Emission Research Center, the "Zero-Emi Tree" was installed at the entrance of the main building as the crystallization of technology. It also functions as an awning for the passenger vehicle.

Applying computational design for the proposal of “the pleasant workplace for employees” and “the environment supporting the highest quality manufacturing”

To start this project, the architectural designer temporarily joined the company and experienced the same atmosphere and time with the employees. By this experience, two main themes, “the pleasant workplace for employees” and “the environment supporting the highest quality manufacturing”, were set as goals of this project. Next, environmental simulations were applied to understand the impact of environmental factors (light and heat) on employees and the machines. By visualizing such environmental factors, feedbacks were made on designs. Following show the methods used in the environmental simulations.

Based on this understanding, this building reflects the concept of generating numerous points of contact with people from outside the organization.
