Tokyo Mokkoujou Arts & Crafts Furnishings, Customer Opinions:Fifth-generation Kabukiza Theatre

The presence of wood breathes life into historical buildings. That is an irreplaceable gift from our predecessors. Tokyo Mokkoujou Arts & Crafts Furnishings believes in that power of wood, and will continue to spin that power into the futures of its customers. This time, we interviewed Mr. Sato from Shochiku Co., Ltd.

It is not “restoration.” It is the “passing on of time.”
We therefore made free use of expertise and technique.

Stage floor made of Japanese cypress harvested from a single mountain

Kabuki is part of Japan’s traditional culture and was designated a World Heritage Site in 2008. The rebuilding of the specialized Kabukiza Theatre did not mean simply reconstructing the form. It also required “passing on time” experienced within, in addition to the building.

Wood can be regenerated and reused. Because of this, we would like to link the wood that had co-existed along with the people as part of the Kabukiza Theatre for many years to the next generation as much as possible, and requested help from Tokyo Mokkoujou Arts and Crafts Furnishings.

I was truly impressed with their knowledge of wood and technology. Deciding which wood materials can remain and which cannot is a precise and exacting task. To my surprise, they solved the challenge of building a stage floor that did not vary in color by harvesting all of the Japanese cypress lumber from a single mountain.

The wood was harvested from Tanzawa Mountain in northwestern Kanagawa Prefecture. They persevered in the laborious and time-consuming work. Thanks to them, The Japanese cypress wood stage was impeccable and had a wonderfully soft color. We think this was only possible because Tokyo Mokkoujou Arts & Crafts Furnishings supervised the entire process from procurement of the lumber through production and installation. We think that both the spectators and the actors are satisfied with the new Kabukiza Theatre.
