Research Facilities: Acoustic Laboratory

Introduced below are the research facilities managed and operated by the Institute of Technology. Click the name of a research facility to view the corresponding details.

Acoustic Laboratory

The Acoustic Laboratory is used to perform a wide range of verification tests involving buildings and the acoustic environment.
The reduction of sound-related problems in housing complexes and other buildings is vital. As the most advanced acoustic experiment facility in Japan, the Acoustic Laboratory is capable of performing comprehensive tests and evaluations of all types of sound related to buildings. The Acoustic Laboratory includes an anechoic room, a sound-insulation/floor-impact testing room, and a reverberation room. These three rooms can be used to examine the acoustic effects of studios and music halls, to test soundproofing techniques for condominiums, and to simulate urban noise.

Description of Tests and Experiments

  • Measurement of sound-insulation performance of construction parts such as floors and walls
  • Predicting noise propagation and confirming the effectiveness of noise-insulation measures
  • Evaluating the acoustic characteristics of concert halls

Features of the Facilities

Anechoic Room

  • Air-conditioning noise maintained below the absolute threshold of hearing
  • Outdoor traffic noise kept below the absolute threshold of hearing by a floating structure
  • Equipped with a computer-controlled, five-degrees-of-freedom traverser for accurate positioning of microphones

Sound-Insulation/Floor-Impact Sound Testing Room (Type-2 test room specified in JIS A 1416)

  • Sound-insulation tests
Test piece is unitized for quick setup and replacement.
Test piece is enclosed completely within an air seal measuring 60 mm in width.
  • Floor-impact sound tests
Tests can be performed with two types of concrete slabs, measuring 200 mm and 150 mm in thickness.

The world's first concrete resource recycling system (closed-loop concrete system) was deployed in order to build our Acoustic Laboratory. The building itself was made using 100%-recycled concrete sourced from concrete scraps. In this way, Shimizu has taken one more step toward the realization of a recycling-oriented society.
