Urban Geo-Grid Plan

Systematic Coexistence of Above-Ground and Underground Areas to Create Efficient, Orderly Urban Spaces

Tokyo has transformed itself from simply the capital of Japan into a true cosmopolitan city. For the next stage of its development, Tokyo must meet growing demand for efficient, orderly systems, develop its urban spaces, and evolve into an advanced information city.
Targeting the systematic, improved coexistence between above-ground and underground areas by taking advantage of unused underground spaces, the Urban Geo-Grid Plan was formulated to effect gradual development without impairing existing urban functions. This plan simulates the systematic development of city functions in underground spaces to resolve problems associated with congestion in above-ground areas.

Urban Geo-Grid Plan

The Urban Geo-Grid Plan combines various elements, including grid points, grid stations, underwater grid stations, and an underground network connecting these points and stations. The space within each underground point and station will be brightly lit by a solar lighting system that channels natural light. This model plan covers a large area extending from Hibiya to the waterfront, through Tokyo Bay, and ultimately to Boso Peninsula.

Grid Point

A grid point is the smallest unit of space constructed underground. Established within each grid point will be the facilities needed to provide various community amenities that allow residents to enjoy comfortable lifestyles, including convenience stores, exhibition halls, and public bathhouses. Grid points will also serve as disaster-prevention bases in the event of a disaster.

Grid Station

A grid station is a control center for a group of grid points. Inside each grid station, office buildings, hotels, shopping centers, and other facilities will be built around a vast central atrium. A grid station will also serve as the hub for a new transportation system. A large portion of the above-ground areas will be set aside for urban parks.

Underwater Grid Station

In this model plan, a new transportation system runs across Tokyo Bay. Underwater grid systems branch out from the undersea tunnel and serve as support facilities. Leisure facilities and other functions will be established above each underground grid station.

Underground Network

The underground network connects points and stations with transportation, communication, and energy supply systems, while also serving as a daily media conduit for regional communities.
